Intro to Sailing
is for youth who are new to sailing, or need to review the basics - rigging and basic boat-handling, and basic rules of the road, and safety.

Intermediate Sailing 1 is for youth who have taken a sailing class before, with us or elsewhere - building on the basics for more confident boat control and sailing skills.

Intermediate Sailing 2 challenges youth sailors with more sailing techniques, such as spinnaker, crew teamwork, decision making, and a taste of racing fun.

Racing Clinic is a training for youth sailors in the fun and challenging sport of racing, on Club 420 Sailboats, the boats used by our Fall/Spring High School Racing Teams and the MSU Collegiate racing team. Best for youth who have taken a sailing class before, with us or elsewhere.

All these classes may be repeated by a student, and instructors may switch a student to a less or more challenging concurrent class if more suitable. Intermediate classes are best for youth who have a basic understanding of sailing and/or have taken our junior sailing camp before.

IMPORTANT >>> Registration System Quirks

This system collects basic info for you and the child before reaching the class registration page. The system calls the child being registered your "Guest".  Here is a short guide to navigating through the first few screens.

1) When you start, under "Who's Attending" choose "ME plus 1 guest". This lets the system take info for both you and child.
Then fill in your info, and click "Next" at the bottom of the page.

Minimum physical and language requirements to operate and move on a sailboat, and understand and respond to directions from instructors must be met by student. These classes have both on-shore and on-the-water components. Covid-19 program considerations make it necessary that students remain in scheduled activities, in the locations in which they occur. If a child cannot or refuses to participate in on the water activities, or remain in their group and location on shore, parents may be contacted to pickup child early.

Class runs from 1-4pm, Monday-Friday. Drop-off time and check-in is from 12:45-1pm, and sign-out/pick-up from 4pm-4:15pm.

In regard to Covid-19 concerns, we will require of parents and/or students:

Daily form checked by parent to indicate child is healthy,
No-contact temperature checks of students at drop-off (check-in),
Physical distancing, masks/face gaiters when in closer quarters unless medical reasons apply - students will need to bring a mask or face gaiter with them,
Hand-sanitizing/washing pre and post class, and before snacks,
In addition, daily temperature checks of staff and volunteers, and daily attestation of wellness will be taken.

Parents will be asked to indicate if they are comfortable with their child crewing a 13-19ft sailboat with another child. Those that are comfortable will be assigned a sailing partner for the week. Parents may indicate a specific child sailing partner by name.
